Car Boot Sales

The new season of Car Boot sales is almost upon us. The first sale of the season will take place on the playing field on Saturday 7th April 2012. Sellers will be welcome on site from 7.00am for the same fee as last year just £5 per car, although traders will be charged £10. The sale is open to the public from 8.00am until 1.00pm and you can park on the field for just 50p. All the proceeds will be shared between St Andrew’s Church, Paull and the Village Hall.

Queen’s Diamond Jubilee

In 2012, Her Majesty The Queen will become the second Monarch in British history to celebrate sixty years on the throne, the previous Monarch to achieve this was Queen Victoria. The Queen has reigned through some of the most profound and breathtaking changes ever to have taken place in our history. So it is absolutely right that The Queen’s achievements – her hard work and dedication across this extraordinary time – be celebrated by all of us, both in this country and across the wider Commonwealth.

Thousands of beacons will be lit around the world on the 4th June 2012 to commemorate Her Majesty The Queen’s 60 year reign over the UK and as head of the Commonwealth. The beacon at Paull has been registered with Mr Bruno Peek OBE MVO OPR, the Pageantmaster for The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Beacons. It will be one of the 2012 beacons to be lit. The Beacons will be lit between 10pm and 10:30pm on Monday 4th June 2012. Exact times will be sent to coordinators nearer the date. Her Majesty The Queen will be lighting the National Beacon in London at a round 10:30pm that night.

Paull Shipyard 1812

On May 11th 2012 it will be exactly 200 years since the Royal Navy ship of the line HMS Anson was launched from the Shipyard at Paull. The shipyard was further down the river than the present site of Hepworth’s Shipyard, it was at the end of Anson Villas near to the sportsfield. The shipyard was owned by a Thomas Steemson. 1812 was in fact one of their busiest years ever with the completion and launch of the Apollo in January for the East India Company and the preparation to launch HMS Anson in May.

Under the Village Hall

In 1983 a brick skin was put around the wooden Village Hall. This meant that the younger memers of the village could no longer get underneath the hall to their ‘dens’. Recently, during the planning work for the New Village Hall, we had to go under the floor of the Village Hall and we took some photographs of what it looks like today. If anyone has any meories they would like to share then send them to Paul Cross at crosspaulg@aol.com and we will publish them. No doubt they will bring back some memories for certain people. 50+ Club

The 50+ club is now well established with an average of 10-14 people attending each week. The next class will take place on Thursday 1st March 2012 between 9.30am and 10.30am. and every Thursday after. It will consist of about 1/2 hour chair aerobics and 1/2 games such as kurling, bowls, skittles etc. The cost of each session is only £1.50 to cover the cost of hiring the hall, but tea and biscuits are included. We guarantee you will enjoy the experience.

Farmyard Bingo

Farmyard Bingo

A great fun night evry thrid Thursday in the month with our Farmyard Bingo. We shall have the usual TEN GAMES of Bingo with a Book of 8 Games for just £1 and 2 Flyers available at £1 each. Prizes will be vouchers for some great Farmyard Meat and Produce Prizes available care of Andrew Little Butchers, Market Place, Hedon. Doors will open at 7.00pm with eyes Down at 7.45pm. There will be the usual raffle with some excellent prizes and following the success of December we hope to see more new regular faces.

Kettlercise Classes

‘Kettlercise classes have started and will take place every Monday in the Village Hall. About 15 people attend every week and they have now decided they would like the time of the class to be from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. This new time will begin for all classes from Monday 27th February 2012.

Licensed instructor, Simone Laurie, will teach the class. The cost is £4 per session but first time users pay just £1 for their first class as an introduction to kettlebells. Kettlebells are provided.

Cinema Shows

The next Cinema Show takes place in the Village Hall on Saturday 10th March 2012 when the film will be ‘The Duchess’. The film starts at 7.00pm and lasts 101 minutes.

The trailer for the new film The Duchess contains two shots of Diana, Princess of Wales, in her prime and the very familiar strapline “There were three of them in their marriage.”

For Diana and Georgiana, both Spencers born at the family home at Althorp, shared striking similarities. Both were shy teenagers who blossomed after being catapulted to fame by marrying older, wealthier men. Both became fashion icons, with the Duchess sitting for artists such as Gainsborough and Reynolds, just as her great great great great niece would for Mario Testino, two centuries later. And, like Diana, Georgiana found consolation in the outpouring of public affection when it became obvious that her marriage to William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire, would never deliver her longed-for dream of happy-ever-after.

Amanda Foreman, whose best-selling book, Georgiana Duchess of Devonshire, was the inspiration for the new film, says: “You can’t deny there are extraordinary comparisons. Like Diana, Georgiana had that ability to make people feel special. But she had a dark side which became all-destroying.”

Lady Georgiana Spencer was just 17 when she married the 26-year-old Duke. The Spencer and Cavendish families were Whigs, but William’s position as one of the nation’s most important dukes made it impossible for him to dabble in politics. So Georgiana become the public face of the family’s political ambitions.

While her handling of her public image was masterful, her control over her private life was less impressive. She and her husband had little in common besides a desire to produce an heir, which after two daughters, Georgiana finally did, in 1790. But then came heartbreak, when her best friend Lady Elizabeth “Bess” Foster engineered her way into the Duke’s bed.

Georgiana decided to tolerate the situation and found herself at the centre of 18th-century England’s best-known love triangle. Amanda Foreman says: “She had such low self-esteem that she allowed the situation to continue. She was desperate to please. That meant she was quite easily victimised.”

Georgiana found solace in the arms of a string of lovers, including Charles Grey, the 2nd Earl Grey. But while the social mores allowed William to produce a number of children out of wedlock, when Georgiana gave birth to Grey’s daughter, the Duke insisted that the child (an ancestor of the Duchess of York) was handed over to Grey’s parents.

“Against all the odds, she managed to regain her reputation and her social position while in her late thirties,” says Foreman.

“She suffered an eye infection and the doctors who tried to cure it scarred her face. Those scars released her from her fears. All the inhibitions about whether she was beautiful enough or whether she was up to the job left her.”

This is where the two women’s stories diverge: Diana’s tragic end denied her the chance to rebuild her life.

Keep Fit Classes

Due to work commitments Matt has had to give up taking the Circuit Training on a Tuesday Evening. We thank Matt for all his time and effort in keeping the people of the village fit. GOOD NEWS Simone Laurie is a qualified instructor and has agreed to take over the class and so these sessions will continue every Tuesday evening in the Village Hall between 7.00pm and 8.00pm. The next session will take place on Tuesday 28th February 2012.

Approximately once a month we produce a newsletter that is delivered to all houses within the village of Paull keeping everyone up to date with current and future activities in the Village. Some people who live outside the village have asked if they can receive a copy. We have therefore set up a service so that if you send your email address to crosspaulg@aol.com we will send you a copy in a pdf format. Once we have your email on file we can also advise you of other events and activities coming up in the near future. For example in the Autumn we are planning a further showing of the historic photos of Paull that date back over 150 years and you will be one of the first to be notified. New Computer Training Course

Our computer training course is now well underway with 10 particpants who all now have an understanding of the basic of how a computer works, use of the keyboard, how to create an email address, and write and send an email. The next class will take place in the Village Hall, on Friday 24th February 2012 between 10.00am and 12noon. The course is designed for beginners and those people who want to learn a little more about the things they want to do e.g. download photographs, skype, video films etc. The first lesson of the New Year will follow up on emails showing how to add an attachment e.g. a photograph to an email, create and manage your contact list. The course costs £2 per session. If you would like to come along we have 9 laptop computers to teach you and 5 dongles to connect to the internet. Obviously people who need the training are not likely to be reading this article. So please if you know someone who would like to learn then please contact Paul Cross on 07711797200, who has agreed to become the Village Digital Champion. Paull Holme Tower

Mr Simon Taylor (the owner of Paull Holme Tower) has provided an update on the efforts to save Paull Holme Tower which you can read on our Paull Holme Tower page. The tower was open to the public, for the first time, in September 2011 as part of the English Heritage Weekend. Many of the people who visited the site that day (over 600) wrote to English Heritage saying that more should be done to save this 15th century site. English Heritage have responded and you can read the continuing storty on our Paull Holme Tower web page which you can access by clicking on the tab at the tob of this page.

NatWest Grant

Paull Village Hall wins funding

It has been announced today (Monday 28th November) that Paull Village Hall came top of the voting in the Nat West community Force Challenge with 497 votes. We have been awarded £6,275 towards our project to provide sound and audio equipment to the Village Hall. Anything we purchase with these funds will be fully transferrable into the new hall.

Nat West have already contacted us and over the next few days they will contact us again to organise the publicity and handing over of the funds. They will publish more information on their website from 28th November http://communityforce.natwest.com/project/883

Humber Enterprise Zone

THE HULL MAIL is reporting today, 16th November 2011, that new Humber Enterprise Zone proposals will include sites at Brough, Paull and Preston in the East Riding.

The report in the Mail indicates that these developments are now clearly on the agenda. Residents in the town (and those in Preston and Paull) now need more information and need to ensure that they can take full advantage of any benefits that the Enterprise Zone may bring – whilst opposing any measures that might be to the detriment of the area.

3D Model of New Village Hall

Full Planning Permission received for New Village Hall

We can confirm that today Tuesday 18th October we have received FULL planning permission for the Annexe Building which will be built on the land, recently acquired, adjoining the village hall. This means that we now have Full Planning permission for the whole scheme for the proposed New Village Hall.

Carpet Bowls

Every Wednesday night starting at 7.30pm a group of people from the village meet to play Indoor Carpet Bowls at the Village Hall. If you would like to come along and enjoy the competitive spirit of a good game of bowls for just £1 then come along any Wednesday and you will be made most welcome. Say No to 0800 Numbers

You will be aware that many companies today give there telephone numbers as 0800 type numbers so that you are paying a premium rate for the call, particularly when you use a mobile to call them. What you may not be aware of is that most of these companies have normal numbers just like you and I, but how do you find it. Well there is now a website that can help you, SAYNOTO0870 and its address is http://www.saynoto0870.com/ You simply click on the address above and then ‘Search to find an alternative number’ at the top left of the page, then enter either the company name or the number you were given click Search and it will provide you with all their alternative numbers and the costs. Alternatives numbers are listed for 0500, 0800, 0808, 0844, 0845, 0870
